Collapse of Communist rule Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Collapse of Communist rule - Essay Example Over the years, Communism had slowly eroded away the feeling of security and freedom that many citizens in countries such as Poland, Hungry, and Bulgaria craved. The world was a different place and the countries of Eastern Europe wanted to become a more integral part of the global community (Devinatz 318). This did all come to a head in 1989 as Communism as we knew it quite simply, and quickly, collapsed. Interestingly enough, the change that came to Eastern Europe had its foundation in various sectors of society that wanted a new form of government. Change began to happen from the inside out as members of different political ideologies began to become influential in the state. In Poland, for example, the free trade union Solidarity movement in the late 80s began to receive massive support from the Polish people. By June 1989, they had take control of the Senate, leading to a non-Communist Prime Minister. This contributed to the eventual collapse of Communism from within, leading to a near domino effect as the wave of anti-Communist sentiment flowed into Bulgaria and Hungry. It would only be a matter of trim before that Iron Curtain fell once and for all, and its effects were almost immediately felt in German and the Soviet Union. Reunification of Germany One of the factors leading to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall can actually be attributed back to the changing society in Eastern Europe. East German citizens began to realize that their freedoms had been squashed under Communism, and their spirits rose when they witnessed what was happening in the nearby countries of Poland, Bulgaria, and Hungry. As history tells us, demonstrations began to occur throughout East German society, the largest of which occurred when Mikhail Gorbahew visited Berlin in October 1989. Citizens from all over the region were demonstrating for the rights to be a free populace and to be rid of Communism. Gorbadhev himself, quite surprisingly to some, warned Communist leaders at the ti me that it appeared a near revolution was at hand and that they needed to listen to the cries of the people. This was the true reality of what lead to East German reunification with Germany. For one of the first times in Communist history, the leaders began to heed the cries of their people. The protests began to grown in number and by November of 1989, East Germans were actually permitted to freely cross into West German, leading to the destruction of the Berlin Wall that had long divided the two countries. End of the Soviet Union By 1991, the block of republics comprising the Soviet Union was the last remaining bastion of Communist Rule in the region. In the case of the Soviet Union, it can be seen that t was growing increasingly difficult to properly care for and maintain such a massive regime that had been built over the years in the 13 various states comprising the former Soviet Union. The truth is that there are numerous factors, many dating back to the days of the Cole War, t hat contributed to the eventual collapse of the entire system, and the eventual granting of independence to the various countries comprising the Commonwealth of Independent States. The reality was that it was certainly too large of an undertaking to create a truly centralized and unified state that

Movie review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Movie Review Example Walter Lee is sure that investing the money in a liquor store will provide the most long-term financial security for the family. He has some friends that want to invest in the business with him, but they are not willing to put up any of their own cash. Momma Younger, played by Phylicia Rashad is sure that getting out of the dismal housing situation they are in would help the entire family most. She has dreams of a nice neighborhood and a spacious house where there is enough room for all the family members to breathe. She has set her sights on a pleasant little house in the Clybourne Park neighborhood. The only problem is this neighborhood is all white. The Youngers would be the first African-American family to live there. Other major characters that have their own dreams and desires that are attached to the money in some way are Benethea and Ruth. Benethea is the sister of Walter Lee and Ruth is Walter Leeââ¬â¢s wife. Their young sonââ¬â¢s name is Travis. The updated production is loosely based on the original play. Some of the updating is unfortunate because the feel of the story is altered tremendously. I feel that Phylicia Rashad and Sean Combs are woefully miscast in this production. The original story is about a family that was less polished and more real than the one portrayed in this production. Rashad and Combs are too smooth in their delivery to have credibility as the matriarch and oldest son of a family struggling to get out of the ghetto. Their presence gives the story an air of people pretending (not very convincingly) that they are salt of the earth. Stylistically, the updated feel of the story robs the original of the edginess in the original story. Some of the criticism I feel towards this updated version stems from the way the family reacts to the blatant racism they face from their white neighbors. The family doesnââ¬â¢t seem shocked or even truly angry. Walter Lee seems to be resigned

New poduct for WALKERS CRISPS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
New poduct for WALKERS CRISPS - Essay Example When the company started, its first flavours released to the market were cheese and onion flavours. Currently, Walkers has introduced very many types of flavours in the potato crisps produced and this has attracted a lot of customers who appreciate the different tastes that come in the different flavours. Due to its vast numbers in its customers, Walkers has proved to be a company that can accommodate the introduction of new products. Therefore, I propose introduction of Walkers Fresh Juice production and sale. Despite the beverages sold in the PepsiCo. Inc, the company does not produce fresh juice. With its huge acres of land for farming potatoes for the manufacture of crisps, I feel this company can use part of that land to grow fruits that can be used to make the fresh juice. For a company that is currently aiming to produce and sell healthy foodstuff, it is my strong belief that making fresh juice for sale will serve this purpose while attracting a great number of customers who are already loyal to Walkerââ¬â¢s crisps company. It is also part of PepsiCoââ¬â¢s mission, to be the global company for production of consumer products that will produce the best foods and beverages. (BOONE et al 2011). One of the growing trends in the United Kingdom in food production is the desire by the consumers to have healthy and safe snacks. According to recent studies and research projects, it has been noted that a high number of people are much interested in natural and healthy drinks and also foods. An example is how fat content and even salt has been reduced in the manufacture of some snacks so as to respond to the issues that have been raised concerning health.( GREAT BRITAIN 2004). This trend has been accelerated by the government of the United Kingdom, when it put strict regulations in labelling of nutritional value of foods and beverages as a measure of controlling obesity in the country. In this market, there has been a lot of emphasis to the manufacturers to use
Oedipus the King Essay Example for Free
Oedipus the King Essay Man is the marionette in the hands of destiny. It is the circumstances and fate which bring tragic incidents in his life. The Aristotelian tragedies are generally based on this attitude. According to Aristotle tragedy is the representation of action. Common meaning of tragedies is the poignant end of the play. Here we are going to discuss about the two different tragedies which took place in different era. The first tragedy is the tragedy of ââ¬Å"King Oedipusâ⬠which happened approximately 2000 years before and the second tragedy is the tragedy which belongs to the modern era. It is Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Death of a Salesman. â⬠They are different from each other but apart from a long gap of about 2000 years, but yet some resemblances are there in them. We are going to discuss on the resemblances and differentiations. Let us consider ââ¬Å"King Oedipusâ⬠first According to the rule of Aristotelian plot ââ¬Å"Oedipus the Kingâ⬠is divided into two different parts, one is simple plot and another is complex plot. In simple plot the changes in the fortune of King Oedipus take place without Peripety and discovery. It is a journey from ignorance to knowledge. He has to confront with the consequences of the miserable truth. At first he is not ready to accept the fact but at the end the circumstances compel him to accept the reality. The protagonist, along with the other characters, totally becomes helpless in the hands of destiny. He is a king but the qualities of normal human beings are present in him. The tragedy takes place because of the sin he has committed inadvertently. According to the opinion of Aristotelian tragedies the hero of the play is neither perfectly good nor entirely bad. Oedipus thus is the man of ordinary weaknesses. He has had all the eminence but here he has shown falling into ruin from this distinction and it is unfortunately not because of any deliberate sin but because of the error committed by him in his ignorance. Like the protagonist the other characters in this play are also good but not perfect. For example Laios, father of King Oedipus who is of course a good soul but still he commits a sin of attempting the murder of his son at the infant stage of his life because of the fear that his son would one day kill him. Laios had the feet of this child bound and pinned. Someone tossed it in a mountain wilderness. So there. Apollo didnt cause this boy to be his fathers killer. Laios didnt bear the terror he feared from his son. Thats what the words of prophecy defined. (Line 717, Scene 3, ââ¬Å"Oedipus the Kingâ⬠) The theory of tragedy of Arthur Miller is based on the life of an ordinary man. Miller was rejected by many critics because his tragedy was not based upon the Aristotelian concept of tragedy where the tragic hero is always a king or a prince. On the contrary the hero is a common man and so according to the critics he is unable to arise the tragic sentiments. But it was the belief of Miller ââ¬Å"that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were. On the face of it this ought to be obvious in the light of modern psychiatry, which bases its analysis upon classific formulations, such as the Oedipus and Orestes complexes, for instance, which were enacted by royal beings, but which apply to everyone in similar emotional situations. â⬠(an essay by Arthur Miller, ââ¬Å"Tragedy and the Common Manâ⬠) With the same viewpoint Arthur Miller has depicted the tragic story of a very simple ordinary man, Willy. Willy is an ordinary person by occupation as well as by nature. Not only Willy but rests of the characters are the exact mirror image of the ordinary man in the modern society who is constantly pursuing the materialist happiness. According to Miller it is not only the kings that can be the tragic heroes but the common man can also play the role of a tragic hero. As far as the issue of morality is concerned both plays are somewhat similar and somewhat reverse to each other. Morality plays a very important role in both of this play but still it defers from one another. Many people believe that Oedipus is an immoral person but it is not a premeditated immorality. Oedipusââ¬â¢ tragic fall, which later leads to tragedy was absolutely not his sin. He slays his biological father and marries to his biological mother. It is actually the height of immorality but at the time of committing this sin Oedipus was totally unaware about the reality. In short he is the immoral man by his predestined actions. The concept of morality is deliberate in Millerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Death of Salesman. â⬠Here the hero of this play Willy Loman flouts all the rules of morality. He is charlatan, flirt and a liar. The lack of morality finds there in the Lomanââ¬â¢s family itself. He goes on deceiving his wife by keeping illicit relationship with another woman. He goes on deceiving his son and wife by making his false image and by pretending to be an important person. They dont need me in New York. Im the New England man. Im vital in New England. (Act 1, Part 1, pg. 4, Death of Salesman) But it is an illusion. Pride is there in both Oedipus and Willy but pride of Oedipus is at least genuine unlike to that of Willy which is just a fake. The heroes of both of the plays have to pay a lot and both of them have suffered a lot due to the mistakes they have done either ignorantly or deliberately. Both Oedipus and Willy in the end succeed in getting the sympathy of the audience. I dont say hes a great man. Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. Hes not the finest character that ever lived. But hes a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid. Hes not to be allowed to fall into his grave like an old dog. Attention, attention must be finally paid to such a person. (Act 1, Part 8, pg. 40) Apart from being an ordinary man Willy like Oedipus deserves the sympathy of the audience.

The second is the new and booming Smartphone + Internet Industry. The combination of both industries created a product (the application) AND service (the features) that covers both the daily transportation needs of commuters with their want of efficiency, reliability, and personalization in tune with the lifestyle of Today. With all this in mind, it is no surprise that myTaxi first focused on its domestic market to establish its name and create awareness of what they have to offer. Following their domestic success, myTaxi marketed itself to its immediate neighboring countries, a strategic move on their part, since their popularity would logically trickle itself to those right next to them, and not those far away ââ¬â being involved in Travel and Transportation, this was clearly a logical step. The real trick however, to marketing myTaxi was through partnerships ââ¬â with individual Taxi drivers and Taxi dispatch companies, and with complementary product brands, such as Samsung wherein the application is pre-installed in all their Smartphone units. Its strength lies mostly in its reputation. In its attempt to expand to the U. S. market, myTaxi had to compete with a few competitors, as the U. S. already had a few Taxi applications to choose from, depending on which city you were in. However, because of its popularity, its brand strength boasting to already have 2. 3 million users, it was able to secure a partnership with the D. C. Taxicab Commission. With their endorsement, myTaxi managed to escalate itself as more legitimate in the eyes of the market than its competitors. Lastly, one must consider that being a pioneer, myTaxi has been and is still reaping the benefits of the First Mover Advantage. It has already created its niche in the Transportation Industry and is transforming the preexisting Taxi market as well. myTaxi was already hailed as one of the top applications of 2012. Traffic is a serious problem in the city, and though much can be said abou t the many reasons behind it, the reality remains that ââ¬Å"for every bus there are 50 cars on the roadâ⬠(Murphy, 2010). That is how congested the city roads are. There is definitely a need to limit the number of vehicles, or one day all movements on the streets will come to a stop. A more efficient and trustworthy Taxi-riding environment may encourage people to commute more, instead of driving out in their own cars for the simplest errands, or from even buying their own. A more centralized and systematized Taxi system may also encourage more discipline in drivers AND passengers, for example lessening the number of pick-ups and drop-offs in the middle of the road. ADVANTAGES: â⬠¢EASE: Streets in the Philippines can be tricky . A lot of roads are not frequented by Taxis; Taxis are usually already occupied when spotted on the main roads; There are usually just certain places where Taxis are most available i. e. malls, markets ââ¬â Getting back from those places may be easy enough, but getting there from wherever is the hard part. Hailing a Taxi is tedious and time-consuming in a busy city like Metro Manila. â⬠¢TRUST: Both for foreigners and locals alike, there is always a chance of hailing a cab that has a fixed Taxi Meter, and you only find out until it is too late. myTaxiââ¬â¢s Fare Calculator works against that. You may also experience a driver bent on swindling you for extra money just because you have luggage or are with someone in need of assistance. With myTaxiââ¬â¢s Personalized Booking Options, you can already pre-bargain with your Taxi driver and let him know what to expect from you. Any additional costs need not be a surprise. â⬠¢SAFETY: If youââ¬â¢re in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, order a cab via myTaxi instead of walking around looking for one. â⬠¢FEEDBACK: Taxi drivers usually have no fear because they answer to no one, or at least no one bothers to go through the trouble of reporting them to their supervisors if they have one. yTaxi lets you provide feedback of your trip and your driver, removing them from the service if they have done you any wrong, or warning future passengers. PRICE: For Passengers: Application remains free. For Drivers: Following the 2,75% (net) for every service mediated by myTaxiâ⬠¦ Taxi Fare Flag Down Rate: ? 20. 00 ? 1. 50 per 500 meters *There is a possibility however, of lowering the rate to 2% due to Taxi drivers generating a below-average income in the Philippines. Average Income of Taxi Drivers: ? ,500. 00 per week MARKET ENTRY: (Product Extension-Communication Adaptation) Product itself remains relatively unchanged, aside from the necessary calibrations for the myTaxi application to work in Metro Manila. Communication approach will have to be different however, as the Philippines is a completely new market to this type of peer-to-peer service . Communication approach to potential passengers will also differ from potential drivers. Pre-Installed Application in Smartphones Units deployed to the Philippines will already have myTaxi pre-installed like in Germany -Pre-Installation leads to awareness that product is available Constantly seeing application will peak customerââ¬â¢s interest Trying out what this application and how it works leads to its evaluation and trial Upon first succ essful order of Taxi, customer adopts to the usage of the application whenever a Taxi is needed, as well as becoming more confident in exploring its other features Product loyalty is established, as well as recommendation of it to peers -myTaxi avatar/widget to be included in the list of Product Features, both online and in print Personalized Proposals to Taxi Corporations Direct contact between myTaxi Sales Representative/s and owner/manager of Taxi corporation through a meeting -Email point of contact of Taxi corporation a myTaxi business plan and proposal -eAdvertisements Personalized Proposals to Individual Taxi Drivers -Group Learning and Information Sessions managed by myTaxi Sales Representative/s -Free trial period -Flyers distributed in strategic areas -eAdvertisements Partnerships with Transportation-Related Government Offices to Aid in Endorsement of Service -Department of Transportation and Communications: Land Transportation Office [LTO] http://lto. gov. ph/ -Metropoli tan Manila Development Authority [MMDA] http://www. mmda. gov. ph/ Others -myTaxi stickers (on Taxis) to increase awareness and curiosity -myTaxi application to be featured in a local newspaper article LEGALITY AND REGULATIONS : No known regulation for the usage of Smartphone applications in the Philippines. Application is an add-on to an already registered business ââ¬â whether by the individual Taxi driver or a Taxi Corporation thus, no taxes, licenses, permits, etc. involved. Political, legal, and regulatory environment poses no known risk. See also myTaxi Term and Conditions. CHALLENGES: â⬠¢Limited Features (cabs in the Philippines are not equipped for payments via debit, credit, or PayPal) â⬠¢Training on how to use the application (more for the drivers than the passengers) â⬠¢Investment on Smartphone and Mobile Internet Plan (many options are offered however by Smart and Globe) Hofstedeââ¬â¢s Cultural Typologies : Power Distance: Acceptance and willingness to try application by the ââ¬Å"head/leading Taxi driverâ⬠or owner/manager of a Taxi corporation is a must. Other drivers will easily follow once connection with the ââ¬Å"bossâ⬠is established. Collectivistic: Word-of-mouth will be the strongest marketing tool both for passengers and potential myTaxi drivers. Masculine: Most if not all Taxi drivers in Metro Manila are male. This must be taken into consideration when marketing myTaxi to them. Expect assertive, challenging and highly skeptical questions. Uncertainty Avoidance: Hypothetically no problems in getting Filipinos to accept myTaxi, especially once German origins are made known. Innovation especially American and European ones, are not seen as threatening. Use this as an advantage. Short-Term Orientation: Acceptance of myTaxi ââ¬Å"nowâ⬠may be achieved, but users, both driver and passenger, may grow bored and/or negligent of the application in the future. Ensure that its long-term advantages are very appealing and well communicated to drivers. Create a dependence on myTaxi for passengers. Sources: AJTP Information Center. (n. d. ). Requirements for Hemp Production
Requirements for Hemp Production Hemp was first cultivated in Canada in 1998, and currently you must apply to grow hemp through Manitoba Health for a yearly permit and follow their guidelines. The regulations require you to get the hemp tested for THC levels to ensure they are under 0.3% on the plant and less than 10ppm residue in products derived from the hemp. (Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance, n.d.)If you register and can comply with the regulations, farming hemp can be very successful. Per MAFRD the average input costs are $388.85/ac, with market price of $0.68/lb, equating to a gross revenue of $518/acre (at a production rate of 575 lb/ac) (Crop Production Costs 2016, n.d.) Hemp grows best on well drained, loamy soils within a pH of 6.0-7.5 requiring 300-400mm of rain, half of which is needed in the flowering stage, meanwhile saturated soils reduce early growth. Seeding is preferably done with a press drill at a depth of 2-3cm, at a rate of 100-120 plants/m2 in rows 6-7 apart. Certified seed is required, and planting should begin as early as ground travel permits, because hemp is day-length sensitive requiring specific hours of daylight to achieve the full height and yields desired. (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, n.d.) In season, there are no pesticides registered for hemp, therefore a long crop rotation with the avoidance of similar disease pathogens is necessary. The main disease of hemp is Sclerotinia, transmitted from planting after canola, soybeans, edible beans, and sunflowers. Hemp grows best after a forage because of the weed suppression and different disease pressures and cycles. Hemp will germinate and grow quickly, reaching 90% ground cover at 4 weeks of growth, out competing weeds. By practicing good agronomic practices for disease, pests and weeds, hemp can readily be grown. However, birds are the biggest pest of hemp, as the plant matures, birds will eat the mature seeds, and can even devour an entire field. This is one way to know your field is ready to harvest. (Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, n.d.) Due to its young history in Canada, not a lot of research has been done, and fertility is an area that little is known. The rule of thumb in Manitoba is to fertilize for spring wheat, and has shown to be sensitive to fertilizer placement so side-banded or mid-row banded is recommended. Statistics show, harvesting the seeds and stalk will remove 200kg/ac N, 47kg/ac P, 211kg/ac K, and 14kg/ac S, however for seed production it is recommended to apply the same amount as spring wheat. (Manitoba Agriculture, n.d.) In Manitoba, we produce hemp for seed, and harvest grain at 22-30% moisture, then dry the seeds down to 8-10% for storage up to 3 years. Harvest date is dependant on the variety, but most varieties mature between 100-120 days. (Manitoba Agriculture, n.d.) Hemp has a very tough stalk and can cause a lot of damage to equipment from the fibrous material getting caught in bearings or moving parts, so to reduce the risk of breaking down we can raise the header as high as it will go and straight cut. This harvest can be anywhere from 100-1200lbs/ac but averages are 760lbs/ac. (Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, n.d.) When you decide to grow hemp a production contract is necessary based on customer demand, and there are few locations that accept hemp seed. If the demand were to rise suddenly it could possibly take more than one crop year to meet those needs based on todays cropping acres. The price of hemp seed has been stable at $0.68/lb. The market is expanding as people become aware of the high Omega-3 and 6 and amino acid content, being used for lactose free milk, salad dressing, protein powder, nutrient bars, pasta and more. (Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance, n.d.) Hemp requires good agronomic practices to be successful, and it is recommended to have a plan for implementing hemp into your rotation and follow that plan with determination. If we can inform the public of the health benefits of hemp, the demand will go up, and so will the required acres. Growing hemp will benefit both farmers and consumers.
